Magic-users in Sigg

It is recommended you read two previous posts made about magic-users, one on armor usage of magic-users and the second on the differences between arcane and divine magic in sigg. These will paint a better picture at the direction thematically when diving deeper on the role of magic-users in the wheel.

Magic-users are lore keepers and historians who plumb the depths of history to mine ancient knowledge. This knowledge is pulled from the aether of yore through runes printed with mysterious implements and bound to a location. These snippets of recalled knowledge are called spells, and often have semi-intelligent life of their own.

The words written on a scroll or in a spell book are the precise instructions of how to call forth these spells from the aether and bind them to your mind until you chose to loose them. Each magic-user acts in extremes to keep this knowledge hidden from everyone save those they deem worthy of their life's work.

Due to their obsession with lost knowledge, magic-users are typically collectors of artifacts of the aeons gone by. These artifacts are typically novel in some way and are seen as status symbols among such practitioners.

Not everyone with the resources is capable of practicing in the ancient techniques of the magic-user. It is a great mystery why there are many incapable of its usage.

It is clear that the fae is a place from which these spells are familiar, much more so than Sigg, so to accommodate spells, magic-users go through transformative processes in which the modify their bodies with fae blood making them averse to true iron, separating them forever from being aligned with any god. A magic-user's prognosis for the afterlife is grim, leading them to seek to extend their lives past the boundaries considered natural.

Magic-users are greatly feared for their weirdness and power, allowing them to garner respect and awe from locale's in which they establish their towers and strongholds. Some brave kings and lords may employ magic-users to use against their enemies at the risk of the untold horrors that could be unleashed upon their kingdom by a magic-user's experiments and rituals.

"The hot winds of the west carried in dark clouds that billowed around a lone iron pillar erected in the center of the empty desert. The camels began grunted nervously as the caravan neared the tower. My guides explained I must wait and they approached the tower with four of their slaves. An old man in black linen robes emerged from the tower conversing with the guides and a deal was struck, four slaves in exchange for a week's more water. As our caravan crested the next dune empty handed and down four slaves, I asked my guide why we received no water skins. He calmly pointed up. Looking up I saw those dark clouds hovered above our caravan and a cool droplet landed on my nose and trickled down into my beard." -- Excerpts from 'Black Magicians of the Dromad Dunes', in the Scripta Rota.
