expeditions

Players may want to accomplish minor tasks in between games at the table. These expeditions may vary widely from sending a message from one town to the next, or sending a retinue of soldiers to search for a lost dungeon. When a player wishes to send an expedition the referee must determine the minimum retinue size required to accomplish the expedition. An example of some expedition minimum sizes are listed below.

Minimum Retinue Type of Expedition
1 Deliver a Letter
10 Fetch an Item from the Wilderness
30 Blaze a Woodland Trail
50 Set up a Forward Camp
100 Destroy a Monster Encampment

After the minimum retinue size is determined, the time taken of the expedition can be found by dividing the movement of the retinue (MV) by the miles traveled (MT) plus 1d6 days i.e. (MV / MT + 1d6) days. This value should not be known by the player starting the expedition. Time taken represents the total time from leaving the starting point to returning to the starting point. The details of the length of arrival to a destination is left up to the referee to interpret after rolling for the result of the expedition.

To determine the success of the expedition roll on the table below, modifying with a +1 for every 10% increase of minimum retinue. For example a minimum retinue of 100 would receive a +1 for each additional 10 men hired. Exceeding more than 100% results is a guaranteed success, but will double the time taken. For each 10% below the minimum retinue, a -1 is applied to the roll.

2d6 Result
1-2 Failure - Heavy Losses, 1d100% of the retinue was lost.
3-5 Failure - Minor Losses, 1d20% of retinue was lost.
6-8 Success - Slow, takes 1d6 days longer.
9-11 Success - Expectations met.
12 Success - Expedient, drop the 1d6 days from expedition time.

Food must be provided. If food runs out in the expedition it is considered a failure, rolling a 1d6 on the previous table without modifiers to determine how many of the retinue starve, desert, etc.
